Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of devotional hymns which proclaims God, lays stress on meditation on the True Guru (God) and lays down moral and ethical rules for development of the soul, spiritual salvation and unity with God. The greatest glory of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is its universal scriptures free from bias and prejudice. It is the only scripture of its kind which enshrines in it the hymns of saints without distinction of race, religion, caste or creed, for contained in Guru Granth Sahib Ji there are hymns by the Gurus as well as Hindu and Muslim Saints.

Guru Granth Sahib is considered the Supreme Spiritual Authority and Head of the Sikh religion. Guru Granth Sahib was not written by the devotees after the Gurus had gone, but it was dictated and compiled by the Gurus themselves. Thus it is the Authentic Divine Scripture, no body is allowed to change even a comma or a period out of the 1430 pages. Each and every word is dedicated to the Glory of the Almighty God only. It is not a reproduction of earlier religions, but the Divine Word (Gurbani) came to the Gurus direct from God. Guru Nanak stated that it was not his philosophy, it was not his understanding and it was not his thinking, but the Word was coming to him direct from God and he was simply delivering His message to the world.
Guru Granth Sahib Ji starts with proclaiming “There is one God, and Truth is his name.” A total of 5894 hymns on 1430 pages are enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib JiAll the hymns are written in poetry form in musical measures called Rags and can be sung.
In a Sikh Gurudwara (temple) the pride of place is held by Guru Granth Sahib. It is placed on a high palanquin and covered in expensive cloths. It is presided over by a priest or granthi. During a service hymns may be selected from the Guru Granth Sahib and sung by any member of the sangat or congregation.
