General Information about Punjab and Punjabi Language.

Punjab, a region in Northern India and the east side of Pakistan,
has a long history and rich cultural heritage. After the Partition
of India in 1947 half of the Punjab land goes in Pakistan and half
in India. The Punjab is a agro based state and most of the people
of Punjab are in agriculture business.

People living in the Punjab, and Punjabi immigrants abroad, speak
the Punjabi language. The language is originally spoken in the state
of Punjab of India and in the East Punjab of Pakistan. The Muslims
in Pakistan write Punjabi in the Arabic script, and Sikhs & Hindus
of Punjab write it in the Gurumukhi script. The word 'Gurmukhi' literally
means from the mouth of the Guru. Gurmukhi has some similarities
to older Indian scripts of the times, but it's thirty five characters and
vowel modifiers were standardized by Guru Angad Dev Ji. Gurumukhi
script uses 10 vowels and 40 consonants. The word "Gurmukhi" literally
means 'coming from the mouth of the Guru'. This script was introduced
by Guru Angad Dev Ji, in the 16th century. The script was for everyone
regardless of their caste, religion, or creed.

The Sikh Guru's laid a great emphasis on learning as with every Sikh
temple they built a school, which they called Taksal.
